Q. What is mental illness?
A. Mental illness is an emotional pattern that causes you to function less capably in your everyday living. Obsessive and/or addictive behavior is also a sign of mental illness.
Mental illness is NOT a brief period of anxiety, grief, anger or other feelings that may be out of character. You may be anticipating a new job, a move, a loss of a family member or friend, or you may have been a victim of a personal crime. It is natural at times to experience periods of great emotion. A brief intervention with a mental health counselor may be helpful to help you balance your feelings and your everyday living.
If your anxiety, fear, grief or anger persists, and your work performance, health and hygiene, communications with family, friends and co-workers begin to strain or deteriorate, you should quickly make an appointment with a mental health counselor. You are experiencing symptoms in need of early intervention or strategies in order to maintain better mental health. Early intervention and prevention may avoid escalation of symptoms that result in a serious/chronic condition.
